Representatives of the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana have paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to strengthen support systems and recognition for Ghana’s football legends.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Ministry’s conference room, featured a delegation led by the association’s president, James Kuuku Dadzie, alongside several distinguished retired footballers who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s football history.

The delegation was received by the Minister and his team, with the Ministry’s Chief Director, Wilhelmina Asamoah, officially welcoming them and expressing optimism about future collaboration between the government and former players.

During discussions, Mr Daszie stressed the need for stronger partnerships to ensure retired footballers receive the recognition and welfare support they deserve.

He also reflected on Ghana’s football legacy, highlighting the country’s triumphs at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982 — achievements that established Ghana as a continental powerhouse.

Kofi Adams acknowledged the immense role former players have played in shaping Ghana’s sporting identity and assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to improving welfare programmes for retired athletes.

He outlined ongoing initiatives focused on post-retirement opportunities, healthcare support, and the creation of a dedicated Sports Fund aimed at benefiting both active sports development and retired players.

The Minister also revealed plans to introduce annual commemorative events to honour past footballers, emphasising that their contributions remain central to Ghana’s continued prominence in African football.

“The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” Hon. Adams said, urging the association to work closely with the Ministry to develop sustainable strategies that honour the past while inspiring future generations.

The association expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed its commitment to building a productive partnership with the government.

Members of the delegation included Osei Kofi, Mohammed Polo, Abdul Razak, and George Alhassan, among others.

The visit marks a significant step toward ensuring Ghana’s football legends are properly celebrated and supported, while safeguarding their legacy for future generations.
