Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga, says the authority is optimistic of completing the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex before the end of the year as efforts intensify to revive stalled youth infrastructure projects across the country.
Speaking to Citi Sports on Monday, February 9, 2026, after a recent inspection tour of the facility, Ayariga revealed that significant progress has been made on parts of the complex, with sections such as the administration block nearing completion.
“We are looking at the contractor resuming site as soon as possible. We hope to complete the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex by the close of this year” – Osman Ayariga, CEO, National Youth Authority.

He added that contractors are expected to resume full work on the playing pitch next month as part of the next phase of construction.
Beyond the Azumah Nelson facility, the NYA boss indicated that three other youth resource centres are also close to completion, forming part of a broader national effort to provide modern sporting and recreational infrastructure for young people.

Hopefully, we are looking at the contractor resuming site as soon as possible, maybe even before the end of this month.
We hope to complete the entire sports complex before the end of the year, thanks to the capital injection from the Ministry of Finance and the support from His Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” Ayariga stated.
“He is very passionate about completing the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, not only this one but youth resource centres across the country.

Ayariga further disclosed that at least two youth resource centres are targeted for full completion within the year, out of the eight currently at various stages of development nationwide.
Currently, we have eight youth resource centers across the country at different stages of completion. The promise is to complete a minimum of two this year ; the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex and one in another region. If we are able to go beyond two, we would love to do that

The Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, once envisioned as a flagship youth development facility, has faced years of delays and deterioration.
Its potential completion is expected to provide a major boost to grassroots sports, community engagement, and youth empowerment initiatives in Ghana.
