Neymar has suggested the 2026 FIFA World Cup could mark the end of his international career, raising uncertainty over his future with both club and country.
The 32-year-old was left out of Brazil’s squad for the March 2026 friendlies against France and Croatia due to ongoing fitness concerns and limited match readiness. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti explained the decision by stating he is selecting only players who are “100% fit” and actively competing at the highest level.
Speaking candidly about his future, Neymar admitted he may already be approaching the final phase of his career.

“This is my last World Cup… I don’t even know if this will be my last year with the national team,” Neymar revealed.
The forward, who has been a central figure in Brazilian football for more than a decade, acknowledged the reality of his situation.
“My career is coming to an END and I have to know that,” he added.
Neymar recently returned to Santos FC but has struggled with recurring muscle fatigue following his recovery from a serious ACL injury sustained in late 2023. His fitness issues have raised questions about his ability to maintain consistent performances at the highest level.

Widely regarded as the face of Brazil’s post-Pelé era, Neymar has built a career defined by flair, creativity and decisive contributions. From his early breakthrough at Santos to high-profile spells in European football, he has carried the expectations of a football-passionate nation.
However, his journey has also been marked by setbacks, including injuries, intense scrutiny and the pressure of delivering World Cup success. Neymar has featured in three World Cups (2014, 2018 and 2022), making 13 appearances while scoring eight goals and providing four assists.

Despite moments of brilliance, the tournament’s ultimate prize has eluded him, with Brazil falling short in successive campaigns.
Reflecting on his career, Neymar urged those close to him to cherish the remaining moments.
“I always tell my family and friends: Enjoy as much as you can because it will end,” he said.

His comments have sparked fresh debate about whether he will lead Brazil in one final push at the 2026 World Cup or step away sooner as injuries continue to take their toll.
Neymar’s eventual departure would represent a significant turning point for Brazilian football. Beyond his performances on the pitch, he has served as a symbol of the team’s identity and a bridge between generations.
