Ghana Para Sports has made history with its first-ever qualification to the Commonwealth Games, achieved by para swimmer Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto, who will represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

Aheto secured qualification through a bipartite slot following his classification and impressive performances at the World Para Swimming Series in Australia in February 2026.

At the event, he recorded personal best times of 1:38.58 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke S9 and 31.72 in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S13, earning eligibility to compete in either event at the Games.

This landmark achievement represents a major milestone for Ghana Para Sports and underscores the steady growth of para sports development in the country, driven by collaboration and institutional support.

Appreciation has been extended to key stakeholders for their role in supporting the athlete’s journey, including Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee; Farida Ayishatu Idriss; the leadership of Ghana Para Swimming; and the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana, led by Samson Deen, alongside Henry Larbi and Majeed Eldeen.

Their administrative and financial support during the World Para Swimming Series in Australia played a crucial role in securing this historic qualification.

Ghana Para Sports has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering athletes with disabilities to achieve excellence on the international stage and proudly represent the nation at major global competitions.
