Aliou Cissé has been appointed head coach of Angola’s national men’s football team, marking a new chapter for the former Senegal boss.
Cissé, the 2022 CAF Coach of the Year, takes over after parting ways with Libya earlier this week, reportedly due to a salary dispute. His deal with Angola is understood to run for four years.
The former Birmingham City and Portsmouth midfielder is expected to replicate the success he achieved with Senegal, whom he led to their first-ever AFCON title.
Under his guidance, the Teranga Lions won the 2021 AFCON, defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final. He also guided Senegal to the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, narrowly missing out on a place in the Round of 16 in 2018 via the controversial drawing of lots rule.

At the 2022 World Cup, Senegal made it to the round of 16 but was eliminated after losing 3-0 to England.

Angola failed to qualify to the 2026 World Cup and crashed out of the 2025 AFCON at the group stage. Cisse is expected to lead Angola to the 2027 AFCON and make a deep run in the tournament.
