Hohoe United FC have officially withdrawn from the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season, citing unfair treatment

The club confirmed its decision on April 1, 2026, following an emergency board meeting, describing the move as a “principled stand against injustice” and accusing the Ghana Football Association of systemic bias and unfair treatment.

Sanctions and Officiating at the Heart of Decision

Central to Hohoe United’s grievances is a disciplinary sanction that forced the club to play three consecutive home matches away from the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

The punishment followed security concerns during their league fixture against Vision FC, but club officials argue the decision was excessively harsh and damaging to their campaign.

Beyond the ban, the club also raised concerns about what it described as persistent questionable officiating throughout their debut season in the top flight. According to the statement, these issues collectively undermined their competitiveness and confidence.

Relegation Battle Compromised

At the time of their withdrawal, Hohoe United were battling relegation, sitting 17th on the table with 30 points after 27 matches.

With seven games remaining, the club insists the decision to move their home fixtures to neutral venues  including Tema New Town ; significantly weakened their survival chances.

Playing away from their traditional home base not only deprived them of fan support but also disrupted their tactical and psychological advantage, making an already difficult relegation fight even tougher.

League Implications and Possible Sanctions

The withdrawal has immediate consequences for the Ghana Premier League.

Under Article 13(5) of GFA regulations, all remaining matches involving Hohoe United will be forfeited. Opponents scheduled to face the club will automatically be awarded three points and three goals.

This development is expected to have a direct impact on both the title race and relegation battle, potentially altering the competitive balance of the league in its final stretch.

In addition to forfeitures, Hohoe United could face further disciplinary action from the GFA, including possible fines or long-term sporting sanctions for withdrawing mid-season.

A Major Blow to the League

Hohoe United’s decision marks one of the most dramatic incidents in recent Ghana Premier League history, especially given that it comes during their debut season at the top level.

The situation now places increased scrutiny on the GFA’s handling of disciplinary matters, officiating standards, and overall league governance.

What Happens Next?

With the league entering its final phase, attention will now turn to how the GFA responds to the situation and whether any resolution can be reached.

For Hohoe United, the decision represents a bold and risky stance  one that could define the club’s future both on and off the pitch.

As the dust settles, the fallout from this withdrawal is likely to reverberate far beyond this season, potentially shaping conversations around reform and accountability in Ghana football.
