Novak Djokovic has commended teenager Joao Fonseca for his brilliant display in securing a shock win over the veteran Serb in their epic 2026 French Open third round match.

39 year old Djokovic lost the best of five sets to the 19 year old Brazilian 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7,5-7 to crash out of the competition.

The enthralling match which lasted four hours and 53 minutes amid an unexpected heat wave in most parts of Western Europe, tested the physical limits of Djokovic who wilted after storming to a big lead early in the match.

However, Fonseca outlasted the 24 time Grand Slam champion to secure a fourth round matchup with Casper Ruud on Sunday, May 31.

Reacting to the shock loss on his X page, Djokovic was complimentary of the young Fonseca’s game by stating that,

“An epic battle, Joao. And a hard-fought victory you deserve. Best of luck for the rest of the tournament and the incredible career you have ahead of you.”
