Ghana’s sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah missed out on a podium finish in the men’s 200m final at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships after placing fifth in a time of 20.82 seconds.

Ivory Coast’s Traore Chiekhna stormed to gold with a winning time of 20.31s, while Botswana’s Phaezel Selepe claimed silver in 20.42s. South Africa’s Xotyeni Mihlali completed the podium places with bronze in 20.56s.

Speaking to the media after the race, Amoah admitted he expected a better performance.

“No blame, I feel like I should have done better,” he said.

Joseph Paul Amoah etched his name into the history books after winning gold in the men’s 200m at the 2023 All African Games. He clocked a winning time of 20.70 seconds, becoming the first Ghanaian to win the event since Ohene Karikari in 1973.

In April 2026, he clocked a season-best of 20.28 at the Mt. SAC Relays in the USA. He also remains part of Ghana’s national 4x100m relay team that won gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra. The team has also qualified for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, scheduled in Beijing.
