Kylian Mbappe has moved clear of Olivier Giroud to become France’s all time lead goal scorer and says he is happy to make more history for the European nation.
Mbappe scored his 58th goal to move clear of Giroud’s 57 goal mark after bagging a brace in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal.
The win was registered in France’s opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup that had the 2018 World Champions step up in the second half after an average first half performance.
Mbappe scored his first off Michael Olise’s brilliant assist and slammed home France’s third to secure the win for France.
Beyond making history with France, Mbappe moved to 14 goals in World Cup history to move within two goals of equaling Miroslav Klose and Lionel Messi record as the top scorer in the competition’s history.
“I’m very happy to be able to write a bit more the history of my country. It’s always what I have wanted to do,” Mbappé said. “But we know why we are here. I will have time to think about this kind of things [the records] later when I stop playing.”
“I’m here to help the team, to continue with my teammates to write another page in the history of the French national team. We know there is still a long way but we are ready” Mbappe said.
