Tunisia head coach Sabri Lamouchi has described his team’s 5-1 loss to Sweden in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as “tough” and “painful”.
He said this at a post-game presser after watching Yasin Ayari of Brighton and Hove Albion score twice in the win with Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres getting on the score sheet.
Ayari, who is of Tunisian descent, scored in the seventh minute and 96th minute but Lamouchi lamented his team’s mistake-heavy performance.
“It’s a tough defeat, it’s painful to start the competition with such a heavy loss. We made far too many individual errors and, with world-class players like the two Swedish strikers – (Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres – that’s unforgivable in a major competition like the World Cup.”

“We need to reduce our errors and address our tactical shortcomings. We need better cohesion, to be more compact and solid across the board, and that’s what let us down today; Sweden were superior” Lamouchi said.
