Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch says his team’s emphatic win in its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign is one that Canadians won’t forget.

He said this after Canada hammered Qatar 6-0 to register its first ever win at the World Cup though it came at the expense of Ismael Kone suffering a broken leg.

Kone suffered the serious injury after a rash tackle from Homam Al-Amin that led to a red card in the 33rd minute.

Kone is set to miss significant time as a result and was the first of two red cards for Qatar as Assim Madibo was also dismissed. Speaking after the win, Marsch said,

“The big carrot was a home World Cup but it was also to change the sport in the country, to create an identity for what Canadian soccer can be. No-one will forget this. No Canadian will forget this day.”

“There will be 40 million people who said they were here when this happened. It is an incredible, seminal moment in this country.”

Canada have four points heading into its last game against Switzerland with both nations tied on four points and in pole position to qualify to the next round.
