Canada’s long wait for a first-ever FIFA World Cup victory continues after a dramatic second-half comeback earned the co-hosts a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening Group B encounter in Toronto.
In front of an expectant home crowd, Jesse Marsch’s side dominated large spells of the contest but were forced to settle for a point after Bosnia frustrated them for much of the evening with a disciplined defensive display.
The Canadians entered the tournament under pressure to secure their first World Cup points after losing all three matches in Qatar 2022 and failing to register a point during their debut appearance in 1986.
Bosnia Strike First
Despite Canada’s energetic start, it was Bosnia who stunned the home supporters midway through the first half.
After already looking dangerous from several set-pieces, Bosnia finally made one count in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic rose to head home after a clever flick-on from veteran defender Sead Kolasinac.
The goal silenced the Toronto crowd and rewarded Bosnia’s pragmatic approach as Sergej Barbarez’s side looked content to absorb pressure and hit on the break.
Canada responded by increasing the tempo, with Jonathan David seeing a golden opportunity saved by Nikola Vasilj, while Tani Oluwaseyi and Liam Millar continued to trouble the Bosnian backline.
Kolasinac Leads Bosnian Resistance
The second half became a relentless siege on the Bosnia goal.
Canada thought they had finally found a breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Richie Laryea burst into the box and fired past Vasilj, only for Kolasinac to produce a stunning goal-line clearance that ricocheted onto the crossbar and away to safety.
Moments later, Bosnia nearly doubled their advantage when Ermedin Demirovic broke through one-on-one, but the striker squandered the opportunity to leave Canada hanging by a thread.
As the pressure mounted, Marsch turned to his bench, introducing Promise David, Jacob Shaffelburg and Ahmed in search of fresh energy. The changes immediately injected life into Canada’s attack.
Larin Rescues Canada
With time running out and Bosnia retreating deeper into their own half, Canada’s persistence was finally rewarded.
In the 79th minute, Promise David helped create the opening before Cyle Larin collected the ball inside the penalty area, turned sharply and fired a shot that took a deflection before finding its way beyond Vasilj.
The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the stadium and gave Canada renewed belief in their search for a winner.
However, Bosnia weathered the late storm, with Vasilj remaining composed under pressure and the defence standing firm through a series of corners, long throws and set-pieces.
All to Play For
Canada pushed desperately for a winning goal in the closing minutes but were unable to find a breakthrough as Bosnia secured a valuable point from their World Cup return.
While the draw means Canada finally avoid defeat at a World Cup, their wait for a first victory on football’s biggest stage goes on.
For Bosnia, the result continues the momentum that carried them through dramatic play-off victories over Wales and Italy, while Canada will feel they missed an opportunity after dominating possession and creating the clearer chances.
Group B remains wide open, but both nations know that stronger performances may be required if they are to reach the knockout stages.
