Ghana’s hopes of fielding a full-strength women’s 4x100m relay team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have suffered a setback after sprinter Anita Afrifa pulled up injured during her opening race on Tuesday.
Afrifa was unable to finish Heat 4 of the women’s 200m after feeling a sharp pain in her right knee midway through the race.
The sprinter had been recovering from an injury sustained during Team Ghana’s pre-games training camp at the Derby Arena and was making her first appearance in Glasgow.
Her latest setback casts doubt over her availability for the women’s 4x100m relay, where she is expected to play a key role.
Team Ghana’s medical staff is monitoring her condition and will assess the injury before deciding whether she can compete in the relay.
Afrifa’s injury is a blow to Ghana’s athletics team, which has enjoyed encouraging performances in the sprint events and will be hoping she recovers in time for the relay.
