Team Ghana boxer Desmond Pappoe has withdrawn from the boxing competition at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after suffering a shoulder injury, the Commonwealth Games Association of Ghana (CGA Ghana) has confirmed.

The announcement comes ahead of Pappoe’s scheduled quarter-final bout, ending his campaign at the Games despite an impressive run to the last eight.

According to CGA Ghana, the boxer underwent a comprehensive medical assessment by Team Ghana’s medical personnel and was subsequently declared medically unfit to continue competing.

The decision to withdraw the athlete was taken after consultations involving the medical team, coaches and Games officials, with priority given to his health and long-term recovery.

CGA Ghana described the withdrawal as a major disappointment for both the athlete and Team Ghana, noting that Pappoe had been in excellent condition and highly motivated to represent the country at the quarter-final stage.

In a statement, the Association reaffirmed its full support for the boxer and praised his dedication throughout the qualification process and preparations for the Games.

The governing body also expressed confidence that Pappoe would make a full recovery and return stronger to continue his boxing career and represent Ghana at future international competitions.

CGA Ghana further commended Team Ghana’s medical staff for their professionalism and swift response in managing the injury while ensuring the athlete’s welfare remained the highest priority.

Despite the setback, the Association stressed that Team Ghana remains focused on achieving strong performances across the remaining events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
