Director General of the National Sports Authority Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has urged Ghanaians not to pile pressure on Team Ghana to win medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying Ghana’s preparations have not been ideal.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Ga Mantse Tennis Open in Accra on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Ampofo Ankrah said any medal won in Glasgow should be viewed as a bonus rather than an expectation.

“Apart from wanting to win medals, there is the need to prepare adequately and improve on our performance. If we don’t win this time, we must ensure we keep competing in future tournaments to get closer to winning bronze or silver,” he said.

“We should not put too much pressure on our athletes to bring home medals. If they do, it’s a bonus, but this should be seen as a preparatory phase.”

Team Ghana began its campaign on Friday, July 24, with swimmer Nubia Adjei finishing eighth in her women’s 50m butterfly heat in 30.02 seconds, missing out on qualification for the next round.

Swimmer Abeiku Gyekye Jackson also impressed in the men’s 50m backstroke, setting a new national record and personal best of 26.48 seconds. He narrowly missed the semi-finals, finishing as the second reserve.

Ghana is competing in 10 sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and will be hoping to improve on its performance from the previous edition.
