Spain are world champions again after beating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute, turning home Nico Williams’ cross from close range to secure Spain’s second World Cup title and their first since 2010.

Spain controlled the final from the opening whistle but were repeatedly denied by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who made 11 saves to keep his side in the match. La Roja finished with 20 shots, 12 of them on target, while Argentina managed just two attempts and failed to register a shot on target.

Luis de la Fuente’s side also dominated possession with 65 percent and earned nine corners to Argentina’s four, forcing the holders onto the back foot for much of the game.

Argentina’s hopes suffered a major blow in stoppage time of normal time when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí. Down to 10 men, the defending champions eventually cracked under Spain’s sustained pressure as Torres found the breakthrough in extra time.

The win ends Spain’s 16-year wait for a second World Cup title and brings Argentina’s reign as world champions to an end.
