France and Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise will finish the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the tournament’s leading assist provider after setting a new single-tournament record with seven assists.
The 24-year-old broke Brazil legend Pelé’s 56-year-old record of six assists during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in Saturday’s third-place playoff, providing two assists to surpass the mark that had stood since the 1970 World Cup.

Olise is the first player to register seven assists at a men’s World Cup since official assist records began in 1966. He finished the tournament with seven assists in eight matches as France scored 20 goals on their way to a fourth-place finish.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi, Norway’s Martin Ødegaard, France’s Kylian Mbappé and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz are next on the assist chart with four each. Messi can still add to his tally in Sunday’s final against Spain, but he cannot catch Olise.

Messi already holds the all-time World Cup assist record across all editions and could extend that mark in the final. Olise, meanwhile, has secured his place in World Cup history by ending one of the tournament’s longest-standing individual records.
