All-African Games champion Amadu Mohammed will lead Ghana’s boxing campaign at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Sunday, July 26, following the elimination of two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Abdul Wahid Omar.

Mohammed faces Kiribati’s Eriu Timakau in the men’s 55kg round of 16 at the SEC Hall, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

The African Games champion heads into the bout as one of Team Ghana’s strongest medal prospects. He won gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra. Mohammed’s fight comes after Ghana suffered an early setback in the boxing competition.

Abdul Wahid Omar was eliminated from the men’s 65kg event after a unanimous 5-0 points defeat to England’s Patris Mughalzai in the round of 32. The English boxer won all three rounds on every judge’s scorecard to end the Ghanaian’s campaign.

Ghana will have two other boxers in action on Sunday. Nancy Bamfo takes on Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde in the women’s 54kg round of 16.

In the women’s 57kg round of 16, Adelaide Dede Abaitey will face Fiji’s Jasmine Duanakamakama for a place in the quarterfinals.
