Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed needed just 1 minute, 54 seconds to book his place in the quarter-final of the men’s 55kg boxing competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, stopping Kiribati’s Eriu Temakau in the opening round.

The reigning African Games champion dominated from the opening bell, knocking Temakau down twice before the referee stopped the contest at 1:54 of the first round.

Mohammed took control early with clean, powerful punches that left the Kiribati boxer struggling to respond. Temakau recovered from the first knockdown but was floored again moments later, forcing the referee to wave off the bout.

The victory keeps Ghana’s boxing medal hopes alive after an early setback. Two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Abdul Wahid Omar was eliminated in the men’s 65kg round of 32 after losing to England’s Patris Mughalzai.

Mohammed arrived in Glasgow as one of Ghana’s leading medal prospects after winning gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra. His dominant display reinforces his status as a strong contender for a place on the podium. He now advances to the next round of the men’s 55kg competition as he continues his medal quest.
