The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has paid the outstanding medal bonus owed to Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abdul Wahid Omar, ending a 12-year wait for his reward from the 2014 Games in Glasgow.
Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams presented Omar with the outstanding US$3,000 bonus promised after his bronze medal win at a meeting with athletes in Glasgow ahead of the Games.
The ministry said the payment reflects the government’s commitment to honouring promises made to athletes and improving their welfare.
Kofi Adams said meeting obligations to athletes is important in building trust and showing respect for those who represent Ghana.
The minister also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting athletes before, during and after national assignments.
Abdul Wahid Omar will be the first Team Ghana boxer in action at the 2026 Commonwealth Games when he faces England’s Patris Mughalzai in Glasgow on Friday.
His bout will open Ghana’s boxing campaign, with the Black Bombers and Black Hitters seeking to add to Ghana’s medal tally.
Ten Ghanaian boxers will compete at Hall 5 of the Scottish Event Campus, one of Ghana’s most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games.
