Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans for a fee believed to be around £36 million.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United are set to trigger the midfielder’s release clause, with negotiations progressing quickly following Belgium’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Tielemans joined Aston Villa FC in 2023 on a free transfer from Leicester City and has since become a key figure under manager Unai Emery.
The Belgian has made 134 appearances for Villa, scoring 10 goals, while helping the club achieve significant success during his time at Villa Park.
Villa qualified for the UEFA Champions League twice during Tielemans’ spell, reached the Champions League quarter-finals and lifted the UEFA Europa League last season, with the midfielder opening the scoring in the final victory over Freiburg.

Before moving to Villa, Tielemans won the FA Cup and Community Shield with Leicester City, scoring the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea.
United continue midfield rebuild
Tielemans’ potential arrival comes as Manchester United continue their plans to strengthen their midfield options.
The club have already agreed a £50 million deal for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, while their pursuit of Ederson from Atalanta BC has reportedly ended.
Tielemans is viewed as an experienced, ready-made option who can immediately add quality, composure and leadership to United’s midfield.
Why Tielemans fits United’s plans
Despite having several standout players, many Aston Villa supporters consider Tielemans one of the club’s most important players because of his influence in midfield.

His absence through injury last season coincided with a decline in Villa’s form, highlighting his importance to Emery’s side.
The 29-year-old offers a combination of defensive work, creativity and technical ability. He ranks among the Premier League’s strongest midfielders in duels while also possessing the vision to break defensive lines with accurate passing.
Tielemans has also developed a reputation for producing decisive moments on the biggest stages, scoring memorable goals in cup finals and leading Belgium at the 2026 World Cup.
