The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers”, over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The police in a statement released said the alleged threat was made on Monday, August 24, 2026.
The arrest follows the circulation of a video on social media in which the 46-year-old is alleged to have threatened Mr Ampofo Ankrah.
In the viral video, Ayitey Powers alleged that he visited the office of NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and accused him of cancelling a promotion he had planned.
He also criticised the NSA over what he described as inadequate support for boxing, claiming the situation had affected his boxing promotion.
Ayitey Powers further alleged that Mr Ampofo Ankrah had refused to take his calls before issuing a threat, saying “something will happen” if the situation continued.
According to the police, Ayitey Powers is currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command said the investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
It added that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law based on the outcome of the investigation.
The Police have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information while investigations continue.
