Arsenal began their defence of the Premier League title with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City, producing a dominant performance to make an immediate statement about their ambitions for the new season.
The champions controlled the match from the opening stages and established a two-goal advantage before half-time, with Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka finding the net.
Martin Odegaard then added a third shortly after the restart to put the result beyond doubt and complete a comfortable evening for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal’s performance was particularly impressive in the first half, when they controlled possession, repeatedly tested the Coventry defence and restricted the visitors to very few opportunities.
The opening goal arrived in the 15th minute after Milan van Ewijk failed to clear the danger near the left corner flag.
Riccardo Calafiori collected the loose ball and delivered a low cross into the area, where Havertz produced a composed finish into the bottom-right corner to give Arsenal the lead.
The champions continued to dominate after going ahead and doubled their advantage eight minutes later.
Declan Rice advanced through midfield before finding Christos Tzolis on the left. Tzolis delivered a dangerous low cross which Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only palm away, leaving Saka with a simple opportunity from close range.
The England international made no mistake, tapping the ball into an unguarded net to give Arsenal a 2-0 lead.
Arsenal continued to threaten before the interval, with Coventry struggling to deal with the champions’ movement and passing.
Coventry did produce one notable opportunity before half-time. Tchaouna attempted an ambitious overhead effort from the edge of the Arsenal penalty area which narrowly cleared David Raya’s crossbar.
That moment aside, Arsenal remained firmly in control and went into the break two goals ahead.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal retaining possession and keeping Coventry under pressure.
Odegaard made it 3-0 in the 49th minute after Saka released Ben White down the right.
White reached the byline and cut the ball back towards Odegaard, who found the net from close range. His effort was not cleanly struck and Rushworth appeared to have a chance to keep it out, but the ball eventually crossed the line.
With Arsenal three goals ahead, Arteta was able to manage his squad during the closing stages.
Saka and Rice were withdrawn in the 69th minute, with Noni Madueke and Martin Zubimendi introduced as Arsenal looked to control the remainder of the contest.

Merino and Eberechi Eze later replaced Odegaard and Tzolis as the champions continued to rotate their options.
Tzolis was one of Arsenal’s most influential attacking players during the match, repeatedly causing problems from the left and helping create several opportunities.
Coventry improved after the interval and showed greater determination to move forward, but they struggled to create clear chances against an Arsenal defence that remained largely comfortable.
Their best opportunity for a consolation came when Rudoni headed towards goal from close range, only for Raya to make the save.
Arsenal continued to threaten at the other end, with Zubimendi delivering a dangerous cross and Myles Lewis-Skelly forcing Rushworth into another save with a curling effort.
Coventry were unable to find a way through, however, and Arsenal comfortably saw out the remaining minutes.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-0 victory for the champions and gave Arteta’s side an ideal beginning to their title defence.
For Coventry, the defeat was a difficult introduction to life in the Premier League, although their second-half performance provided some encouragement after a challenging opening period.
Arsenal, meanwhile, could hardly have asked for a better start. Three goals, a clean sheet and a dominant display gave the champions an early boost as they begin their attempt to retain the Premier League crown.
