Alexander Isak scored twice inside the opening nine minutes as Liverpool secured their first Premier League win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Isak opened the scoring in the sixth minute, firing a powerful effort past Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Peersman after receiving the ball inside the box.

The Sweden international struck again three minutes later, latching onto a superb through ball from Cody Gakpo before rounding the advancing goalkeeper to double Liverpool’s advantage.

Isak thought he had completed a hat-trick in the 33rd minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Dominik Szoboszlai forcing several saves from Peersman while Alexis Mac Allister also went close.

Ipswich struggled to find a way through Liverpool’s defence, although they threatened occasionally from set pieces and long-range efforts.

Liverpool remained in control after the break and introduced Bradley Barcola in the 64th minute for his debut following his move to the club.

Ipswich briefly thought they had an opportunity to reduce the deficit when Dominik Szoboszlai was brought down inside the box, but a VAR review ruled the Hungarian offside in the build-up.

Liverpool managed the closing stages comfortably, making further substitutions as they protected their two-goal advantage.

The victory ends Liverpool’s run of two successive 2-2 draws at the start of the campaign and gives new manager Andoni Iraola his first Premier League win in charge.

For Ipswich, the defeat leaves them still searching for their first points of the season.
