American tennis player Ben Shelton has described New York City as the greatest sports city in the world and praised its fans as the best.
He said this after beating defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in one of the best matches this year via a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 result.
The quarterfinal matchup lasted several hours with Shelton closing out the win in the wee hours of Wednesday, September 9.
Shelton let out his emotions after the win to secure his second US Open semifinal appearance where he is scheduled to take on fellow American Frances Tiafoe on Friday, September 11.
“For me it’s always about the people in the crowd…or the city of New York that showed up tonight till 3 a.m. with the USA chants until the very end.”

“That’s what kept me going, and that’s what got me this win tonight. It’s incredible.”

“I always say that this is the greatest sports city in the world. I say that this is the greatest stadium in the world” Shelton said.
