The Referees Association of Ghana has confirmed media reports that 17 of its members have been captured in the investigative report of Anas Aremeyaw Anas looking at corruption in politics and football.

On Monday, reports emerged that 17 referees were caught on tape engaging in several acts perceived to be corrupt as per the scope of Anas’ investigations.

The said referees are James Osafo, Jason Nunoo, Kennedy Bentil, Adams Badiu, Alhassan Badiu, Safi Adade, Samuel Sukah, Kyereme Yeboah, Cecil Fletcher, Nathan Anafo, Harry Atitonu, Umar Teni, Joseph Wellington, Charles Dowuona, Rahman Salifu.

Citi Sports checks have confirmed that referees have been written to by the BBC for responses and the Referees Association of Ghana has admitted receiving correspondence in relation to the referees in the tape.

“The letter is trying to tell you that Africa Eye wants to prove to the world that there is corruption in Ghana football. It is their duty to prove it. It asked the referees to replay before June 4,” said T.R.K. Attiful, Deputy National Instructor with the Referees Association of Ghana in an interview with Kumasi-based Aseda FM.

He went on: “I don’t want to talk about the issue of entrapment. The question is ‘you collected it?’ Fifa has told you if you want to operate in its environment, don’t take cash, benefits, gifts etc.

If I were the referees, I will not respond to mine. Why? It’s inconsequential. It changes nothing because the deed has been done already. It only makes their project incomplete. No matter what you do, you have been captured and have gone contrary to the code of ethics of FIFA.

I’m yet to watch the video but I have heard what transpired and read the letters of some of the referees who have been served questionnaires, and it appears to be true.

I have a VIP ticket and on Wednesday, I will be at the Conference Centre to watch the premiere.”

The investigative piece is set to be aired in Accra on June 6 and 7.
