Brighton and Hove Albion right wing back Tariq Lamptey has asked England’s U – 21 head coach Lee Carsley to exclude him from the Young Lions squad ahead of their upcoming UEFA U – 21 championship qualifiers in June.

According to report, Lamptey who was born in England but to Ghanaian parents has been approached by the Ghana Football Association in a bid to convince him to switch nationality.

The 21 year old who has represented England at the U – 21 level twice was due for selection but has chosen to sit out the qualifiers against Kosovo, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Albania as he mulls a nationality switch.

Young Lions coach Lee Carsley however disclosed that nothing has been decided yet.

“There is an issue over his dual nationality, he has had an approach and it is something he is considering at the moment.

“He has asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of head space. He’s not switched, its not cemented or anything like that.

“But he has had an approach and we have to respect that.

“We have made it clear how important we see him to us, I know the seniors have as well.

“It is not something that we have given up on.

“Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him,” he stated.

Lamptey is one of many foreign born Ghanaian players the GFA has approached in a bid to boost the quality of Ghana’s squad for the World Cup and future competitions.
