Chelsea vs Real Madrid UEFA Champions League Preview

Chelsea will be trying to overturn a 2-0 deficit when they welcome Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

In each of the past two seasons, the winner of this Champions League tie has gone on to win the competition, but Chelsea have a minor mountain to climb if they want to be the team continuing that run this year. While their 2-0 deficit is not the worst at the halfway stage of the Champions League quarter-finals, Chelsea are in yet another poor run of form which makes a comeback seem unlikely.

The Blues are now without a win in their past five matches, losing four of those including the first leg defeat to Real Madrid last week. Despite breaking their four-game goalscoring drought against Brighton at the weekend, Chelsea gave up their 1-0 advantage to lose 2-1 to the Seagulls for a fourth consecutive home match without victory.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, will be hoping for a similar story to last season when they beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals — before knocking out Manchester City in the semi-finals (their likely opponents in the next round) and finally beating Liverpool to win their 14th Champions League. This is their competition and they have already pulled apart a Liverpool side that were in good form at the time, before hitting Chelsea where it hurt last week.

The 2-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu came just a few days after Real Madrid were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal in La Liga, potentially showing signs of a wobble as the title race gets away from them. But they followed up the win over Chelsea with another 2-0 victory at the weekend, beaten Cadiz away from home, carry good momentum with them to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Real Madrid match stats

As mentioned, Chelsea were beaten by Brighton at the weekend, to continue what has been a terrible year for the Blues at Stamford Bridge. Once a fortress, Chelsea weren’t too bad in the first half of the campaign at home, losing just one of their 10 matches — beaten by Arsenal. However, since the turn of the New Year, Chelsea have won just three of their 10 games at Stamford Bridge, with four defeats – three without finding the net.

Chelsea will likely need to go gung ho at some point at Stamford Bridge chasing the deficit, which could mean a lot of action in front of goal. However, last week we were treated to a busy attack from Real Madrid and it didn’t result in too many corners. Overall there were just six corners in the first leg, split even at three apiece.
