Africa Armwrestling President congratulates IOC President Elect Kirsty Coventry

Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), has congratulated Kirsty Coventry on her historic election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Coventry was named IOC President-Elect during the IOC Session in Greece, becoming the first woman, first African, and youngest individual to assume the role.

In a statement, President Osei Asibey hailed Coventry’s achievement:

“This is a landmark moment for the Olympic Movement.

We are thrilled to see a highly respected and accomplished athlete like Kirsty Coventry—a former Olympic champion—take the helm of the IOC as its first female and African leader.”

Coventry celebrated for her advocacy in women’s empowerment and youth development, brings a wealth of experience to the position.

Osei Asibey added: “Her unique perspective as an Olympic champion and respected sports leader ensures her presidency will be defined by innovation, inclusivity, and a steadfast commitment to the values of Olympism.”

The AFA President also expressed optimism about Coventry’s potential impact on arm wrestling, stating,

“We are confident her leadership will open new doors for arm wrestling to grow and thrive as an Olympic sport. We look forward to collaborating closely with President-Elect Coventry and the IOC to advance our shared goals and elevate arm wrestling across Africa and globally.”

The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), the continent’s governing body for the sport, remains dedicated to promoting armwrestling and nurturing talent throughout Africa.
