NSA Boss Yaw Ampofo Ankrah commits to Upgrading National Stadia to CAF Standards

The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has assured stakeholders that his team is committed to taking proactive measures to ensure that national stadia across Ghana are maintained in top condition, with a specific focus on meeting the stringent standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to avoid potential sanctions.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the state of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, particularly following recent challenges that have drawn scrutiny from both local fans and international bodies.

Ankrah’s pledge was made in the context of ongoing efforts to improve facilities like the Accra Sports Stadium, which has been a focal point of criticism in recent years.

On March 28, 2025, Ankrah revealed in an interview with Citi Sports that he was “shocked” after conducting inspections at the Accra Sports Stadium, describing the venue’s condition as akin to a “crime scene” due to several maintenance and infrastructural challenges.

Despite these issues, the NSA managed to prepare the stadium for the Black Stars’ World Cup qualifier against Chad on March 21, 2025.

In response to reports that Hearts of Oak were considering using the Accra Sports Stadium for Wednesday’s home game against Nations FC, the NSA clarified that permission was denied and stated that the facility requires major renovations.

“We don’t need to wait until CAF or FIFA knocks on our doors; we need to be proactive, and that is exactly what I want to do, and we have started” – NSA D.G
