Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt pulled off a stunning and fully deserved 2-0 victory over Italian giants Lazio in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final, played under freezing conditions north of the Arctic Circle.

In a match that required volunteers to clear heavy snowfall from the pitch just hours before kick-off, Bodo/Glimt made the most of home advantage in the icy setting.

Ulrik Saltnes broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, reacting quickest to poke home from close range. The Norwegian midfielder doubled the lead in the 69th minute with a sensational lob over goalkeeper Christos Mandas, expertly set up by Jens Petter Hauge with a delicate chipped pass.

Saltnes nearly completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute but was denied by Mandas when clean through. The Lazio goalkeeper was again called into action deep into stoppage time, pulling off a superb save to stop Odin Bjortuft’s powerful volley and prevent further damage.

Despite Lazio’s status as group toppers in the league phase and their hopes of reaching a first major European semi-final since 2002–03, they were outclassed in Norway. Bodo/Glimt’s energy, precision, and belief carried them through a dominant performance that reflected in the scoreline.

The Norwegian side, competing in the quarter-finals of a major European competition for only the second time in their history, will now travel to Rome for the second leg next Thursday  with a vital two-goal cushion.
