Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that football will be safer for all stakeholders as Ghana marks the 24th anniversary of the May 9 Disaster.

The Disaster claimed the life of 127 people with several people sustaining injuries from a stampede that took place in a clash between archrivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001.

To mark the 24th anniversary of the disaster, a brief ceremony was organized and had Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku reiterate his call justice for the death of Kotoko fan Francis Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong earlier this season from hooliganism. In his address, the Sports Minister affirmed that football will be a safer space for all involved to enjoy stating,

“For all of us who love our football, we want to continue to encourage that football will be safer. Together with the GFA, we redeveloped some rules, we visited the various stadia facilities that is being used for the Premier League and some we found them to be below standard and therefore have been suspended while conditional approval was giving to others”.
