After delivering a strong worded statement to referees in the Accra Basketball League (ABL) calling for accountability for their actions in the wake of Nungua Coldstore’s controversial game with Spintex Knights, Coldstore founder and manager Wendell Otoo, has called on leaders of the league to step up their efforts to ensure professional ethics are heeded to.
Coldstore’s much talked about game against rivals Knights delivered on the hype by playing out an exciting and thrilling game that ended tied at 75.
However, Nungua couldn’t play out the overtime period due to a lack of players who had fouled out of the game or picked up injuries in the course of the game.
Coldstore got into this fix earlier in the contest when all players on its bench got ejected for leaving the bench area to get involved in an on-court melee.
The incident led to several stoppages in the game and some pockets of crowd trouble and ABL Director Alex Kukula stated in a post-game interview that the league’s disciplinary committee will act once it receives the match report. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

Following up on his initial statement concerning referees and the integrity of the league, Coldstore’s manager directed his plea to ABL executives stating, (Click highlighted text to read full story)

It is important to recognize that responsibility does not solely rest on the shoulders of the officials. The leadership and executives of the entire ABL bear significant accountability for allowing certain officials to operate without oversight over the years. This permissiveness has discouraged many potential investors from Ghanaian basketball.

Teams like Coldstore, which feature many of our seasoned players both within and outside the country, along with Knights—whose recent involvement with BAL (Basketball Africa League) has brought renewed attention to the league—have played a vital role in elevating the sport. The league is now streamed live across multiple platforms, reaching audiences we could hardly have anticipated.

Regrettably, the same officials who have contributed to this growth continue to misbehave and violate established FIBA regulations, often without repercussions. This lack of accountability has undermined the integrity of the league and hindered its progress.

As a manager, I understand the immense financial sacrifices required to keep my team motivated and in top condition, especially in a country where basketball is still fighting for recognition in a predominantly football-oriented sports culture.

It is imperative that the right steps are taken to address these issues and restore integrity and professionalism within Ghanaian basketball.
