Ghana’s national 100 Metre record holder Abdul Rasheed Saminu has called on sports stakeholders to attend more to the needs of local based athletes.

The University of South Florida athlete delivered this statement via a message on his X (formerly Twitter) page after smashing the national record of 9.90 seconds held by Benjamin Azamati since 2022.

Saminu run a time of 9.86 seconds at the NCAA Preliminary East Round to finish first in his race and book a spot in this year’s World Athletics Championship that will be held later this year in Tokyo, Japan in September.

Saminu’s 9.86 seconds is the world’s leading mark which makes him the world’s fastest man at the time of writing which also represents a personal best. His time checks in ahead of South Africa’s Akani Simbine who has clocked a time of 9.90 seconds this year.

“Hopefully more to come and I want the world to know we got talents in Ghana. It’s [an] honour to be the new national record holder…local based athletes deserve more attention as well” he wrote on X.
