21 year old Collen Kebinatshipi has made history by becoming the first Botswana athlete to win gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Kebinatshipi stormed to first place in this year’s Championships in Tokyo, Japan in the Men’s 400 Metre event in a time of 43.53 seconds.

Veteran Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Jereem Richards finished in second place to win the silver medal in a time of 43.72 seconds.

Fellow Botswana sprinter Bayapo Ndori finished in third place in a time of 44.20 seconds to clinch the bronze medal and give Botswana a historic double appearance at the podium.

The pair’s achievement comes in the wake of Letsile Tebogo winning the African nation’s first ever gold medal at the Olympics when he won gold in the Men’s 200 Metre event at the 2024 Olympics.

Both athletes are set to compete in the 4×400 Metre Relay event with Letsile Tebogo and Kebinatshipi described his win as fantastic.

“This is my first title and it feels crazy. I told myself to go out fast and do better than in the semifinal. The medal was just a bonus. “Being able to run the national record and a world lead is fantastic. I still have the relay – I have to go back and recover for it. I think we are a strong contender for gold” Kebinatshipi said to World Athletics.
