Chelsea clawed their way to a remarkable 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad, with Enzo Fernandez scoring deep into stoppage time to salvage a point against the odds and lift the mood after a turbulent week at the club.

City looked on course for victory after Tijjani Reijnders’ thunderous first-half strike gave Pep Guardiola’s side a deserved lead following long spells of dominance. The hosts controlled possession, pinned Chelsea deep, and twice went close through Erling Haaland, who struck the post before half-time.

Chelsea, coached by interim boss Calum McFarlane, struggled for rhythm early on but showed renewed belief after the break. The introduction of Andrey Santos at half-time helped stabilise midfield, and the visitors began to pose more of a threat on the counter.

Chances came and went ;  Pedro Neto missed a gilt-edged opportunity, while Cole Palmer fluffed his lines late on  but Chelsea refused to fold.

Their persistence paid off in the 94th minute. Malo Gusto’s low cross caused panic in the City box, Nathan Aké’s interception only diverted the ball into Fernandez’s path, and after being denied twice by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Argentine midfielder forced the ball home to spark wild celebrations in the away end.

City pushed desperately for a winner in the closing seconds but looked stunned at full-time, while Chelsea celebrated a point that felt like a victory.

The draw dents City’s title push and hands Arsenal a significant boost at the top of the Premier League, while Chelsea leave Manchester with renewed belief after a strong second-half showing under difficult circumstances.
