England coach Thomas Tuchel says a major decision is looming over England’s number 10 role as the national football team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

England have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, Ghana, and Croatia. As part of their buildup, the Three Lions will face the Uruguay national football team on March 27 and the Japan national football team on March 31 in international friendlies.

Speaking at a media briefing after naming a 35-man squad for the upcoming games, Tuchel highlighted the fierce competition for the playmaker role, with Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden among those in contention.

“We need clarity around every position. It is unlikely that we bring three, four or five players for one position. The competition is on [in March], but we will share it.”

“That will confuse everyone. The choice between world-class players in the number 10 means at some point we will have to make a tough call” Tuchel said.

Aside from Bellingham and Foden, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Eberechi Eze are in contention to play the position for England at the 2026 World Cup.
