Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick says a decision on his long-term future at the club is expected soon as speculation continues over who will permanently lead the side.

Carrick, who has overseen the team during a challenging period, admitted there had been no significant developments regarding his position but suggested clarity could arrive in the near future.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s final matches of the season, the former midfielder acknowledged the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his role.

“[I] can’t blame you for asking. [There are] two games to go, there’s not much else I can say,” Carrick said.

“The situation is pretty clear for us all. Same as. It doesn’t change what we are doing this week.”

“The future for me is going to be decided pretty soon, nothing has changed.”

Carrick’s comments come amid growing reports that he could be recommended to Sir Jim Ratcliffe as Manchester United’s next permanent manager.

Although the club has not officially confirmed its plans, Carrick’s work during both his caretaker and interim spells has attracted increasing attention.

Across his combined periods in charge, Carrick has managed 18 matches for Manchester United, recording 11 victories, five draws and only two defeats.

His managerial involvement at Old Trafford has come across two separate periods ;  an initial three-game caretaker spell in 2021 and a longer interim appointment during the 2025/26 campaign.

Despite the uncertainty, Carrick has continued to focus on preparations for the closing stages of the season as United attempt to finish strongly.

The former England international remains a respected figure at the club following his successful playing career, during which he won multiple major honours including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Supporters remain divided over whether Carrick should be handed the role permanently, with some praising the stability and improvement shown under his leadership while others continue to call for a more experienced long-term appointment.

For now, however, attention remains on the club’s remaining fixtures as both Carrick and Manchester United await a final decision on the managerial situation ahead of next season.
