Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson has urged Team Ghana athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games to embrace discipline, sacrifice and proper nutrition in their quest for success.

The former two-weight world champion said there are no shortcuts in sports, stressing that hard work remains the foundation of every champion.

Speaking on Team Ghana’s preparations for the Games, Azumah Nelson dismissed superstitious beliefs often linked to sporting success.

“It’s not about juju or anything; it’s about hard work, sacrifice and good nutrition,” he said.

Azumah Nelson also reflected on the support athletes received during his era, recalling the role played by former Ghanaian leader Jerry Rawlings in motivating national teams.

“In our time, the late Jerry Rawlings was our manager,” he added.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest boxers, Azumah Nelson won world titles in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions, successfully defending his belts on multiple occasions during a distinguished professional career.

His comments come as Team Ghana steps up preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where officials are targeting improved performances across disciplines including boxing, athletics and weightlifting.
