Brazil’s quest for a sixth FIFA World Cup title came to a stunning end after Erling Haaland scored twice to inspire Norway to a famous knockout victory and book a place in the quarter-finals.

The Manchester City striker produced another clinical display on the biggest stage, striking in either half as Norway stunned one of the tournament favourites and continued their remarkable World Cup run.

Brazil entered the contest as favourites but struggled to contain Haaland, whose movement and finishing proved too much for the Selecao defence.

The Norwegian captain opened the scoring with a composed finish before adding his second after the break to put his side firmly in control of the Round of 16 clash.

Brazil pushed forward in search of a comeback, dominating possession for long spells, but Norway’s disciplined defence and organised midfield frustrated the five-time world champions.

The South Americans created chances but lacked the cutting edge that had defined much of their tournament, with Norway capitalising on every defensive lapse.

Haaland’s second goal effectively ended Brazil’s hopes, sending the Norwegian supporters into celebration as the Selecao’s World Cup campaign came to an abrupt end.

For Norway, the victory marks one of the greatest moments in the nation’s football history, with Haaland once again proving why he is regarded as one of the world’s most feared strikers.

Brazil, meanwhile, leave the tournament earlier than expected, with questions likely to be asked about a campaign that promised so much but ended in disappointment and despite the late Neymar Goal from Penalty , the four time Champions are going home

Norway now advance to the quarter-finals full of confidence, with Haaland leading a side that has emerged as one of the surprise contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
