Argentine super star Lionel Messi has shed light on his emotional reaction to his goal and in the aftermath of his team’s latest win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defending World Champions overcame a 2-0 deficit in the 78th minute to record a remarkable 3-2 win over Egypt in controversial fashion.
Messi missed a penalty kick early on in the game but got the equalizer that got the Inter Miami player to celebrate very wildly.
After Enzo Fernandez’s goal sealed the win for Argentina, Messi was seen shedding tears and the the Argentine captain stated the reason behind his emotional outburst.
“The truth is that it was a moment of release, a release for all of us.”

“I was feeling intense anger because of the penalty I wasted, and because of the way I took it. I felt like in that important moment, I had let the team down.”

“That was a huge release, and immense joy for us, and for those fans who came again and prove every day what it means to be Argentine, and how much pride they give us” Messi said after the game.

Argentina are scheduled to take on Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
