The Atlanta Police Department is set to enhance security in the US city ahead of the Argentina-England semifinal clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The development was communicated in a statement from the unit as England is scheduled to take on big rival Argentina on Wednesday, July 15.
Argentina and England hold one of the biggest rivalries in world football with Diego Maradona’s controversial Hand of God goal giving Argentina a win over England en route to winning the 1986 World Cup.
England winger David Beckham was also sent off against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup ion controversial fashion while the two nations hold a political grudge over England taking over the Falkland Islands following a war fought in 1982.

Each nation also has a rabid fan base and the build-up indicates that the clash on Wednesday is sure to come along with major tensions and Atlanta Police are looking to keeping in check.

“Additional personnel and resources are already deployed and will continue to be strategically assigned in and around the event venues, entertainment districts, and other high-traffic areas to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

“These proactive measures are designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event” sections of the statement read.
