Spain captain Rodri says he didn’t expect to win the Golden Ball Award at the 2026 FIFA World Cup that climaxed with Spain winning their second World Cup.
He said this after being named the best player of the competition that had Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final to end Argentina’s bid to win a second World Cup title in a row.
The 30 year old was brilliant in Spain’s campaign with Luis De La Fuente’s team conceding just once in eight games.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri led all players in the most passes completed and most touches categories respectively en route to beating Lionel Messi to the award which is something that surprised him.
“It feels like the perfect script. I certainly didn’t expect this.”
“I’d love for the younger generations to see that a player who touches the heavens, then descends into hell, can come back. It’s a lesson in overcoming adversity” Rodri said after winning the tournament.
