Ghana’s swimmer Abeiku Gyekye Jackson set a new national record in the men’s 50m backstroke at the 2026 Commonwealth Games despite narrowly missing out on the semi-finals.
The previous national record was held by swimmer Jason Arthur at 26.84 seconds. Competing in heat four at the Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow, Jackson finished seventh in 26.48 seconds, setting a new personal best and breaking Ghana’s national record in the event.
His time was not enough to earn automatic qualification for the semi-finals, but he finished as the second reserve and could still advance if two qualified swimmers withdraw.
While his place in the next round remains uncertain, Jackson’s record-breaking swim is another milestone in his international career.
