Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed his disappointment at Ghana’s failure to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Björkegren was speaking at the post-match press conference after Ghana’s 2–1 quarter-final defeat to Malawi at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Malawi’s victory sent them into the semi-finals and secured the final automatic qualification spot for next year’s World Cup, leaving Ghana to take the play-off route for a chance to reach the tournament.
The defeat also ended Ghana’s hopes of matching their semi-final finish from the previous WAFCON edition.
Speaking after the game, Björkegren admitted he was disappointed that the Black Queens could not reach the last four and secure their place at the World Cup.
“Potentially the worst feeling I had in 20 years of coaching. I’m feeling so much for this team, for Ghana. I really wanted to help them to go to the first World Cup in 20 years and we felt that we had a good chance to do it…but we didn’t perform well enough” Bjorkegren said.
Ghana takes on Côte d’Ivoire on Thursday, August 13, to stay in World Cup qualification contention.
