Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, believes the Confederation of African Football has been largely charitable to Ghana by continuing to approve the country’s venues to host CAF-sanctioned matches.
With the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers and the new Ghana Premier League season set to begin in the next couple of weeks, members of the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Sports Fund Board, and representatives from Parliament conducted an inspection tour on Wednesday, August 26, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
According to the Berekum West MP, who was part of the inspection team, the facility should be brought down as soon as possible, warning that Ghana risks exhausting the goodwill it currently enjoys with CAF if the necessary action is not taken.
He believes the earlier the facility is demolished, the better it will be for the country, as Ghana could eventually “run out of credit” with CAF.
In our last qualifiers, CAF initially rejected this venue, so we went to Togo and other neighbouring countries. It took diplomatic manoeuvring to eventually get us to play our games here at the Accra Sports Stadium.
I don’t think CAF will be charitable this time around if we leave the facility in this state.
We need to do a lot more about this facility, and we should start having a conversation about the stadium as soon as possible.
The Accra Sports Stadium has undergone several major renovations and refurbishments since its opening, largely driven by the hosting of international tournaments, safety concerns, and the need to meet CAF and FIFA standards.
