The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, marking the return of one of the country’s most decorated coaches to the national team.
The 62-year-old was confirmed as Hugo Broos’ successor at a press conference onTuesday, September 1, ending weeks of speculation over who would take charge following the Belgian’s departure.
Mosimane returns to the role after Broos opted against extending his five year tenure, during which he guided Bafana Bafana to significant success.
The appointment comes months after Mosimane was linked with the vacant Black Stars coaching position following Otto Addo’s departure in early 2026.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach confirmed that he received an informal exploratory call regarding the Ghana job and submitted an application, but said he never received a concrete offer before negotiations ended.
Mosimane begins his second permanent spell in charge of Bafana Bafana, having previously managed the national team from 2010 to 2012.
His first stint ended after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
He now faces the immediate task of guiding Bafana Bafana through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Mosimane returns with extensive experience and an impressive track record, including leading South Africa to a bronze medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and guiding the team to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
