It was another disappointing night for Ghana as the Black Stars suffered a 2–0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on Thursday.
The defeat extends Ghana’s poor run in AFCON qualifying. The Black Stars are now winless in their last seven qualifiers, with four defeats and three draws since September 2023.
It also exposed some of the problems that contributed to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
WHERE BLACK STARS STRUGGLED
Ghana struggled to create chances, connect midfield with attack and maintain defensive discipline.
Attack: The Black Stars lacked cutting edge and failed to consistently create clear opportunities.
Midfield: Ghana struggled to progress the ball into dangerous areas, leaving the attack isolated for long periods.
Defence: Côte d’Ivoire scored from a long-range effort and a penalty, with Ghana’s organisation particularly poor for the opening goal.
The Black Stars did not register a shot on target until the 75th minute. Carlos Queiroz started Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Ernest Nuamah on the flanks, with Brandon Thomas-Asante leading the attack. But Ghana’s key players struggled to make a significant impact.
CALEB YIRENKYI
Caleb Yirenkyi was trusted to operate as the midfield pivot, making his first start in that role since Ghana’s 1–0 defeat to South Korea in November 2025.
The Coventry City midfielder created three chances, the most by any Ghana player. He completed 35 of 39 passes, a 90% accuracy rate, and made three passes into the final third.
However, his influence dropped in the attacking phase. He had only one touch inside the opposition box, was dispossessed twice and won just one of four ground duels. Yirenkyi was efficient in possession but struggled to turn that possession into sustained attacking pressure.

KWASI SIBO
Kwasi Sibo completed the full 90 minutes and was accurate with his passing, completing 27 of 28 attempts. He also made five interceptions and four recoveries. However, he created just one chance, had no shot on target and failed to win any of his attempted duels.
With Ghana struggling to connect midfield and attack, more progressive play was needed from the centre of the pitch.
ABDUL FATAWU ISSAHAKU
Fatawu struggled to influence the game from the right. He completed just 13 of 21 passes, created no chances and had no shot on target. He had two touches inside the opposition box and completed his only attempted dribble.
He was dispossessed six times and dribbled past three times. Fatawu was also involved in the incident that led to Côte d’Ivoire’s penalty for the second goal. The contact appeared minimal, but the referee awarded the spot kick.
ERNEST NUAMAH
Nuamah played 64 minutes but had little attacking impact. He created one chance, had no shot on target and made only 25 touches, with two inside the opposition box.
He also made three passes into the final third and was dispossessed once. Like Fatawu, he struggled to provide the penetration Ghana needed from the flanks.
LAWRENCE ATI-ZIGI
Ati-Zigi started in goal behind Alexander Djiku, Kojo Oppong Peprah, Gideon Mensah and Jerome Opoku. He made one save and completed seven of 16 long-ball attempts.
Ghana’s organisation was a concern for the opening goal. The Black Stars failed to close down the Côte d’Ivoire shooter, allowing him the space to attempt from distance.
It was similar to the goal Ghana conceded against Croatia at the 2026 World Cup, when the shooter was also given too much space.
The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group C after the opening round and increases the importance of Tuesday’s qualifier against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
For Queiroz, the immediate task goes beyond getting a result. Ghana must improve its connection between midfield and attack, create more in the final third and respond better when games turn against them.
The biggest concern from Bouaké was Ghana’s lack of attacking production. The Black Stars had to wait until the 75th minute for their first shot on target.

After missing out on the 2025 AFCON, Ghana cannot afford another qualifying campaign in which poor chance creation and inconsistent performances leave them chasing results.
