Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has taken full responsibility for Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to The Gambia and apologised to supporters after Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Ghana surrendered a 2-0 lead at the Accra Sports Stadium after Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan put the hosts ahead in the first half.
The Gambia responded with two goals before the break before completing the comeback in the second half to hand Ghana a damaging Group C defeat.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Queiroz described the result as a “terrible” day for the Black Stars and apologised to the fans.
“There is not much to say today after the terrible result for us. I, the staff, all the players, we are deeply sad with the result. And we have to say sorry to our fans, to our supporters, for what happened in the stadium,” he said.
Queiroz also urged supporters to direct their criticism at him rather than the players, insisting the squad remains capable of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON.
“If there is one person who takes the responsibility for the result, it’s me. If you want to blame and criticise, which is correct, you can question me as a coach. Please keep supporting your players,” he added.
The defeat leaves Ghana with just one win from their opening two Group C qualifiers and with plenty to do in their bid to reach the 2027 AFCON.
