Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah is the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion after defeating Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah by unanimous decision in Lagos.
The 37-year-old won all 10 rounds at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, on Thursday, October 1, to dethrone Appah in the main event of the “Chaos in the Ring” promotion.
All three judges scored the fight in Gyimah’s favour as he produced a composed performance to claim the continental title on Nigerian soil.
The victory adds another major milestone to Gyimah’s career, which began when he took up boxing at the age of 27.
Speaking after the fight, Gyimah reflected on his late start and the journey to becoming a continental champion.
“I can’t believe this. I give thanks to myself. I am proud of myself. I never gave up on myself. I started boxing at age 27, and I am 37 now, and I never thought I would end up like this. When you talk about the record of the oldest boxers in the world, I am one of them, and I am so proud of myself. I am a big example for Ghana and the whole world that whatever you are dreaming of is possible. Don’t give up,” he said
Gyimah entered the fight with a professional record of 12 wins and one defeat, having stopped Jamiu Animashaun in the first round of his previous bout in April.
He is expected to return to the ring in December after receiving a challenge from another Nigerian boxer following his title victory.
